Railway Multi-Functioning Maintenance Vehicle

The railroad multi-functioning maintenance vehicle is the result of 25 years of railway experience. The unit was designed so a 4 to 6 man crew could go out to any site no matter how remote, bring all the equipment and materials needed for the remediation work and perform the necessary work without having to tie up the railroad equipment and personnel. The following is a list of the functions and the reasons behind those functions.

  • Crew Cab: The cab was designed to safely carry four passengers and one driver. The driver is also the operator for the crane and other attachments. A five man crew is the average size crew that we use for railway work.
  • Hi-Rail Attachment: The hi-rail attachment operates hydraulically and has all the necessary safety features that you would expect on such a unit.
  • Side Dump Platform: The platform is used to bring in tools, equipment, materials and track protection. The side dump is used after scaling operations we pick up the scaled material, load it onto the platform and then dump the material on either side of the track at a suitable dumping area.
  • Hydraulic Clam Bucket: The hydraulic clam bucket is used to pick up the scaled material from the ditches after the scaling operations are done for the day. The hydraulic clam bucket is used also to clean up after the side dump platform is finished dumping material.
  • Hydraulic Centre Lift: The hydraulic centre lift has two uses. When we are in an area where the crossing is not long enough for us to line up the rail gear, we can park perpendicular to the crossing, lift up the truck, turn the truck 180 degrees and set the truck on the track. We can also use the centre lift to lift up the truck and turn it around to go the opposite direction.
  • Articulating Crane: The articulating crane serves many functions. We load and unload all the tools and equipment we need for a particular site. We use it for placing and removing our track protection during scaling operations. We use it to remove any large boulders that come down during scaling operations. It is used as an aid to some of the rock stabilization procedures. The crane itself has a 10 ton capacity and the operator sits on top of the crane to make sure that he has an unobstructed view of the the work area.
