Antamina Mine, PeruJanod was contacted by Golder first in 2004 for some preliminary pricing of materials and installation costs for some rock remediation work on Antaminas mine road in Peru. Janod received the P.O. in 2007 to aid Golder in putting together a report on the condition of the rock slopes and recommendations on rock remediation techniques to be applied to each site. Daniel Journeaux and Andrew Salmaso arrived in Lima on February 11, 2007. Because of the extreme elevations that we would be working in Antamina had both Daniel and Andrew go through a thorough physical examination to make sure that they could handle the stresses caused by working in such extreme altitudes. The next day we met up with Dave Gilbert the Chief Geotechnical Engineer for Antamina. The area of concern was the mine access road that was controlled by Antamina had rock cuts between the Km 17 and Km 110 There were two reasons why Antamina wanted to be assured that the rock slopes were safe; The first reason was the safety of the mine workers that travelled that road by bus between their work periods and the second reason was that the slurry pipe followed that roadway for it's full distance. The mineral concentrate (zinc, copper and gold) was pumped as a slurry from the mine at over 12,000ft in elevation over 300km to sea level to the port at Punta Lobitos. Making the analysis more difficult was staying focused in elevations of up to 12,000ft. Working on a tight timeline the Golder-Janod team put together the initial report in 10 days and delivered it to the client shortly after.
