Cliff Hangers

ROCK ISLAND Those seemingly still and everlasting walls cradling the Columbia at either end of Wenatchee are steadily wearing away. The evidence lies in heaps at the base of the sheer cliffs shattered basalt on the side of Highway 28 near Rock Island Dam and chunks of gneiss, a crumbly conglomeration of several types of rock, in the margins along Highway 97A near Rocky Reach Dam. State Department of Transportation crews plow away the material that lands on the roads.
